Llama fiber is technically a type of hair, becuase it has a hollow core, rather than wool, which is solid all the way through. This hollow core is like insulation, and makes llama fiber much warmer than the same weight of wool. Like our hair, is much smoother than wool, with few scales on the surface, giving it a silky smooth feel on your hand. It can easily be dyed or it can be used in it's natural color range. Philo Llamas fiber and fiber products are available as both natural colors and in a wide range of synthetic colors. Custom dyeing is available; just ask!
Yarn
Our yarn is spun by mills in Maine, Vermont, and Connecticut. Our 2-ply, sport weight yarn is available in skeins of 1 or 2 ounces, and a wide range of colors, as well as a limited number of natural colors. Ask us if you don't see what you are interested in! Yarn is also shown further down this page, with photos of the llamas who donated their fiber for your knitting, crocheting, weaving, and wearing pleasure.
Hats and Scarves
You can't raise fiber animals without learning to knit and felt eventually, and once you start, it is almost impossible to stop. The pleasure of the yarn in your hands, and the joy of creation lead to lots of hats! New designs are always in production, so check in with us to see what is new! see more designs in our Hat and Rug Gallery below.
Hand-felted Rugs
We have found that rugs are a great way to use llama fiber. It is so soft to walk on! Dry felting techniques, and the wide range of colors, allow you to "paint" with fiber. Our rugs are either free-hand designs like the leaping rabbit, or combine free-hand design with dye-cut elements, like the bears in the forest, shown below.
Woven Rugs
These rugs were hand-woven at the Still River Mill in Connecticut, using our llama fiber (70%) blended with their sheep wool (30%). These fluffy soft rugs are delightful under your feet, and so warm! Rugs are 2 feet by 3 feet, and each one is unique. A few long runners (2 feet by 5 feet) are also available.
Yarn in Natural Colors
Yarn is processed in small batches unique to each animal. Here you can see small photos of the llamas that each of these skeins of yarn came from. From left to right, colors include gray-fawn (Felix), white (Mabsoot), medium fawn (Lil), black (Balthazar), and medium fawn (Soleil).
